Sankar Jayaram named a ‘Top Idea Innovator’

PULLMAN, Wash. – Sankar (Jay) Jayaram, professor in Washington State University’s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and affiliate professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has been recognized as one of 15 “Top Idea Innovators by Sports Business Journal, an influential national magazine for sports industry executives.
The magazine recognized Jayaram for his work with Pullman-based 3D-4U Solutions in developing a Personal Event Viewer. The viewer provides individualized and interactive second-screen fan engagement on 3D and 2D televisions and mobile devices. Independent of millions of other concurrent users, individual users can control what they watch in a 180-degree to 360-degree event space, using either live or on-demand mode with full DVR functionality. The technology was first showcased at Washington State Universitys newly upgraded luxury suites with state-of-the-art 3D screens in Martin Stadium in fall of 2013.
Mobile app released
3D-4U Solutions has since released a mobile app named iStadiumTM in the Apple store and Google Market Place for mobile devices. The company will soon add capabilities that allow people to instantly share their unique, personally produced view of events. This technology has generated considerable interest nationally and internationally for sports, concerts, and security.

Jayaram, along with his wife, Uma Jayaram, associate professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and affiliate associate professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, are co-founders of 3D-4U Solutions. Many of the companys scientists and engineers who worked develop the virtual reality-inspired technology are WSU graduates.
Earlier this summer, the company was invited by Jazeera Sports to Doha, Qatar, to showcase the 3D-4U technology at a World Cup Qualifier soccer game there. 3D-4U has also made strategic partnerships to bring the technology to Europe.
Virtual reality
On the faculty since 1993, the Jayarams are directors of the WSUs Virtual Reality and Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab, where they have provided virtual reality-based engineering technologies for U.S. manufacturing companies, particularly in the area of assembly. They have also done seminal work in Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems, computer graphics, and Artificial Intelligence.
Fans in the WSU Martin Stadium will have an opportunity to engage with this highly innovative technology this fall when many new and updated features will be introduced during the home football games including access to iStadiumTM through mobile devices in the Club seating area.
