Family business is big business in the United States. Family-owned businesses employ 60% of the workforce and create 78% of all new jobs, according to a 2018 report by Seattle-based law firm Davis Wright Tremaine’s Family Business Resource Center. But the law firm found that only 30% of family-owned businesses make it to the second generation and only 12% to the third. Those sobering statistics make the companies honored in Seattle Business magazine’s Family Business Awards program that much more impressive. From Everett-based Pocock Racing Shells — which has been family owned since 1911 — to Rowley Properties Inc. of Issaquah, which is now a fourth-generation family-owned firm, the 14 winning companies have all demonstrated grit, perseverance and tenacity to survive.
