Hydrovolts (Seattle)

Runner-up: Manufacturing Innovation of the Year (Small Companies)
|   June 2010   |  FROM THE PRINT EDITION

Hydropower, the electric lifeblood
of the Pacific Northwest, no longer depends on installations the size of Grand
Coulee Dam. Hydrovolts makes small turbines that operate in small waterways
like canals, spillways, rivers and streams as well as in tidal currents. The
turbines don’t require expensive new construction to install, generate 1 to 20
kilowatts each depending on stream velocity and can be grouped to produce more
power.
