Don Root, Chief Executive, GM Nameplate (Seattle)
Runner-up: Manufacturing Executive of the Year (Large Companies)
| June 2010 | FROM THE PRINT EDITION
Don Root bought controlling interest in GM Nameplate, a Seattle maker of graphic overlays, touch screens, brand identity nameplates and other machined components, from the founding families in 1977 and guided it through dramatic change in his own industry (the move to digital technology) and in his customer base (the move of many manufacturers to offshore production). Under his leadership, GM Nameplate added plants around the United States and in Singapore and China, and grew to $80 million in revenue. Next up: managing the transition to the next generation of leadership.
