This article is part of a series focusing on select companies who placed among WA's 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2018, as determined by employee surveys that measure their perceptions and satisfaction across 82 individual attributes within 10 employment categories.

It’s no surprise that Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Company (MoE) has landed on Seattle Business magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for the 7th year in a row, thanks to the resounding support of its associates. Founded in 1898 “on the values of personal relationships,” by a group of conscientious farmers, the community-focused insurance company has only continued to grow and thrive, offering products throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and, most recently, Montana. MoE offers coverage for individuals, families, farms, and businesses and now employs 423 people, with 381 of those associates located in Washington state.

Over a Century of Thoughtful Coverage

Amidst the celebrations of 120 years in business, MoE hasn’t wavered in its commitment to foster trust and protect both its valued members and associates. “Relationship building within the company, with our agents, and with our members is tantamount to the success we enjoy,” commented one associate.

Though MoE’s home office is in Enumclaw and associates also work at remote offices throughout its covered states, satisfaction hasn’t wavered. As one impressed associate stated, “It's easy to be a great company to work for when all is going well, but this is always a great place to work if you truly believe in the mission, vision, and purpose of Mutual of Enumclaw.”

MoE received the AM Best Rating A- (Excellent) in January 2018, and members and associates alike were rightly proud. One associate gushed, “While we are in a large business segment, the relatively small size of our company allows everybody to make a contribution and have an impact on the bottom line of the company. Our size and culture allow us to be nimble and try new things much quicker than our larger competitors, which is exciting.”

The company remains on the forefront of introducing innovative tools to manage critical current issues including natural disasters and cyber security threats. Rooted in its purpose to deliver a “rare and valuable” service, one associate reaffirmed, “ethical action is cherished and nurtured from the top down throughout the organization.” Another stated, “It is a joy to work for an organization so highly regarded by our community.”

A “Work Family” with Integrity

MoE’s cultural touchstones – Ethical, Responsive, Personal, and Efficient – are seeped into the everyday dynamic at the company and create what many associates refer to as “one big happy family.” “We are allowed to share our opinions, suggestions, and concerns without worry,” says one associate. “A small town, community feeling is prevalent in just about everything,” said another.

This community feeling is fostered by a strong sense of purpose and belonging, encouraged by open, accessible leadership. Sentiments such as, “I like the way that all levels of management treat people like people, and not numbers,” and “we truly care about each other,” ring true for scores of associates.

Many people reiterated that they’ve always felt, “empowered to do what was right,” and praised MoE for providing opportunity, striving to make the company a “workplace that engages productivity without losing sight of the individual associate.”

Not only do associates feel they’re given “the opportunity to learn and grow every day,” but it’s also clear that the commitment to customers extends to associates. As one associate noted, “the company culture is to give an insurer an experience they will not forget, but that rings true for the way the associates are treated as well. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.”

Much like the continuous support of MoE’s insurance products, one associate stated, “this organization stays true to its culture and beliefs in good times and in challenging times.” Another associate reiterated, “it’s the kind of place you could see yourself working for your entire career!”

Benefits Outside the Box

“There IS such a thing as a ‘FREE’ lunch,” exclaimed a MoE associate when asked about the company’s generous benefit offerings, “not only do we take care of our policy holders; in return the company takes care of us.”

MoE’s benefits package extends beyond the typical array, and associates are quick to express gratitude for “the little things that the company does inside and outside of the walls.”

“Benefits provided are excellent (even commented on by my medical providers) and they think outside the box in terms of other benefits to working here i.e. Weight Watchers memberships, working from home, etc.” raved one associate. Other atypical but greatly appreciated perks include sponsorship of local activities, tuition reimbursement, a full, functioning gym with classes, and the apparently amazing soup served at lunch!

“It is refreshing not to have actions driven by politics. Thank you for doing the little things which have a big value,” stated an associate. “Mutual of Enumclaw has been more than just a place of employment for me.  It has brought me a sense of accomplishment, provided me with opportunities, supported my family, and I really enjoy working here,” expressed another.

Over 120 years of a thoughtful, ethical approach to insurance coverage has proven Mutual of Enumclaw’s genuine dedication not only to its customers, but also to its hundreds of associates. MoE’s personal, nurturing, and innovative culture resonates throughout the company. As one associate noted, “I've never worked anywhere else that endeavored so wholeheartedly to offer its associates an environment in which they can succeed.”
