Seeing Red
By Sierra Christman February 21, 2012
In 1958, abstract expressionist Mark Rothko was commissioned to paint several large murals for the new Four Seasons restaurant in New York. It was a volatile time for the artist, who was conflicted about his stunning commercial success, which playwright John Logan outlines in Red, about the working relationship between Rothko and his young assistant, Ken. Decorated with six Tony Awards on Broadway in 2010, Red explores the fundamental what is art? question as it paints a portrait of ambition and vulnerability. This production features audience favorite Denis Arndt in the role of the eccentric artist. Times and prices vary. Through 3/18.
