A Seattle company often referred to as “the Amazon of South Korea” has been named one of LexisNexis’ “Top 100 Global Innovators for 2025” based on its intellectual property.

Coupang has 912 active patent families, and has increased the size of its patent portfolio by more than 15 times the past five years. Amazon, with more than 14,000 patent families, is the only other Seattle company on the list.

The Seattle Times reports that Coupang opened an office in Seattle in 2018 to take advantage of the region’s tech talent and logistics network. Coupang is considered one of the region’s 12 publicly traded companies.

Coupang’s customers are in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, but doesn’t deliver in the United States.

Having two companies on the list puts Seattle into a tie for fifth place among U.S. metro areas, behind only San Francisco-San Jose; New York City; Los Angeles; and San Diego.

LexisNexis considers both Amazon and Coupang as information technology companies.
