The friendly bet between the two city leaders benefits local businesses and community organizations.
The big NFL playoff game this coming Sunday between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers will end with the winner advancing to the NFC championship game. But it also is making for some good marketing play for local businesses and community groups in each of the rival markets, regardless of who wins ― thanks to a friendly wager between the mayors of Seattle and Green Bay.
The mayors issued a “playoff challenge” for the Jan. 12 gridiron showdown, with the payout measured in beer, cheese and coffee. If the Packers win, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan will eat some crow and reward the mayor of Green Bay, Eric Genrich, two growlers of beer from Georgetown Brewing, a selection of cheese from Beecher’s Handmade Cheese and a couple of bags of fresh coffee beans from Café Avole.
Mayor Durkan’s payout if the Seahawks put Genrich’s Packers on ice: beer from Wisconsin’s Stillman Brewing, cheese curds from Ron’s Wisconsin cheese and coffee from La Java Roasting House. As part of the friendly wager, the mayors also have pledged that following the game a crew of city employees will perform volunteer community service benefiting a food pantry in Green Bay and elementary school in Seattle, respectively, while dressed in the colors of the winning team.
“Our Seahawks are the best team in the NFL, and with Beast Mode back, there’s no way we can be stopped,” Durkan says. “I hope Mayor Genrich and the Packers are ready to face the music when Russell Wilson (a former Wisconsin Badger) and our Hawks score a touchdown at Lambeau Field ― remember this?”
Not to be outdone, Mayor Genrich recently tweeted: “Will Seattle’s mayor be wearing green and gold next week? We’re betting on it.”
The Seahawks-Packers face off this Sunday, Jan. 12, at 3:40 p.m. PST in Green Bay.
