Amazon Inc. is leasing 500,000 square feet in the new Prologis Georgetown Crossroads industrial warehouse which has been described as the first multi-story warehouse in the nation.
The Wall Street Journal reports that, besides Amazon, Home Depot Inc. is also taking almost 100,000 square feet of space in the warehouse as well. Amazon and Home Depot are the warehouses first tenants.
The warehouse, which was honored for its innovative and forward-thinking design at Seattle Business magazines recent Skyline Awards program, is just minutes from downtown Seattle. It is an example of a trend in last-mile delivery, as retailers including Amazon, Target Corp., Kohls Inc. and Macys Inc. have launched same-day delivery services in response to customer expectations.
A 2018 report by Zebra Technology Corp. estimates that 40 percent of all online orders will be delivered within two hours by 2028.
Prologis Georgetown Crossroads is a three-story, 590,000-square-foot industrial warehouse at 6050 E. Marginal Way S. in Seattle. It was completed last year. According to its website, it features truck ramps leading to loading docks on the second level and a third floor, served via forklift accessible freight elevators, for lighter-scale warehouse operations. The warehouse features more than 400,000 square feet of fulfillment space for e-commerce.
Amazon spent $27.7 billion in shipping costs last year, according to its annual report.
