RealSelf, which turns 10 this fall, is an online community sharing information about elective cosmetic procedures from breast augmentation to Brazilian butt lifts, from mommy makeovers to microdermabrasion, from porcelain veneers to permanent makeup. It offers doctor reviews, photos, videos and Q&As. The companys employees get pampered, too, with an abundance of workspace amenities including catered lunches, craft beers and free snacks inside its airy, historic building in Pioneer Square. The pet-friendly company reminds everyone: Were allergic to formalities but not to dogs. RealSelf doubled its headcount last year and revenue rose by more than 50 percent, says founder and CEO Tom Seery.
Employees are encouraged to innovate, even if that leads to failure. We think that advances learning, Seery asserts. A sign hanging on an entrance wall has the word confidence lit up like a Broadway marquee, a reminder everyone is helping clients feel more confident in its services. That shared purpose helps drive authenticity, Seery adds. One employee says, We have a great balance of flexibility and focus. Even though we are growing, we still feel like a small company. The companys hiring policy is clear on one point: No jerks allowed. We look for people who leave ego at the door, Seery says.
