Seattle Business writers honored in journalism competition

Seattle Business magazine columnist Bill Virgin and frequent contributor Nick Horton received first-place honors Saturday at the 2011 Northwest Excellence in Journalism awards ceremony hosted at Safeco Field by the Society of Professional Journalists chapter representing publications in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
Virgin won in the editorial/commentary category for his column “Burning the Compact” (September 2010) about the recession’s impact on long-held notions of what it takes to attract and keep employees. Horton won in business and consumer affairs reporting for “Where There’s a Drill, There’s a Way” (May 2010) on British Columbias newly accessible reserves of natural gas.
Contributor Bill Richards received a third-place award in business and consumer affairs reporting for “A Shell Game” (April 2010), a feature on Pocock Racing Shells of Everett. And Chris Winters, former managing editor of Seattle Business, received a third-place award in editorial and commentary for “Dear Howard” (September 2010), an open letter to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz on how to make the coffee company cool again.
