The issue that has been keeping the Legislature up at night may have found a solution. State lawmakers on Sunday reached an agreement on overhauling the century-old workers’ compensation program, with an eye toward giving workers’ comp beneficiaries a choice between a long-term benefits and a lum-sum payment.

The compromise struck by members of both parties would not permit a one-time, lump-sum payment, but would allow an injured worker to accept larger periodic payments until the settlement was paid in full.
