This article is part of a series focusing on select companies who placed among WA’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2017, as determined by employee surveys that measure their perceptions and satisfaction across 61 individual attributes within 10 employment categories.
Hanson Consulting Group (HCG), is a place where consultants feel cared for, and that’s one of the reasons this company has earned itself a spot on the list of 100 Best Companies to Work For in Washington in 2017.
The company—a Kirkland-based, woman-owned business with just over 100 employees—has been connecting professionals with finance, gaming, and IT businesses in Seattle and surrounding areas for over nine years, under the direction of its CEO, Amy Hanson.
A CEO Who Leads by Example
“Amy has been a great leader–encouraging her employees to be accountable and responsible to the team we support, while creating togetherness within her company,” shared one employee.
Another employee added, “She goes above and beyond to make sure that her employees are provided competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a great place to work!”
“Amy Hanson leads with vision in a market where others simply pass vendors through and pay very little attention to their experience with partners,” explained another.
“Our CEO, is a one of a kind special person,” raved another employee,” and her story of how the business started and flourished is inspiring.”
Praise for the leadership at HCG does not stop there, employees value the quality of communication and responsible decision-making their management provides.
One employee celebrated the “accessibility of executive staff, and their willingness to listen to issues” in the HCG office.
“I think Amy and the management team do go a great job of not treating their employees like revenue streams, but treat them as people in whom they have a vested interest,” shared an employee, “This is unique in the consulting world.”

Perks That Go Above and Beyond
“I’ve worked for many Microsoft contract companies, and Hanson is hands-down the best. Competitive wages, crazy good benefits, opportunities for raises, and killer company parties,” gloated one employee.
Positive leadership is not the only benefit employees reap at Hanson. Along with the usual benefits of consulting, the company is flexible about hours, hosts team morale events, and provides extra perks to its employees.
“Company leadership works very hard to ensure employees have the best of everything–industry competitive pay, benefits, and perks,” explained another employee, “Hanson remains as transparent and forthcoming as possible with its associates. They truly make you feel like they’re working for you!”
“Hanson really goes above and beyond to provide employees with what they need to be successful,” shared an employee, “Whether that flexibility is equipment, telecommuting, opening communication with the client, etc. And [the company] is always ready to jump in to defend us when needed.”
Another employee sharing some perspective said, “I work off-site, but the main office is always warm and inviting. The great people, combined with the amazing perks, make this the place to be in the consulting field.”
Hanson has earned itself great praise for both the benefits and positive work environment it provides employees, who acknowledge the singularity of such a work place.
“Hanson consulting recognizes the ability of an employee and accordingly finds a great fit for their work–this keeps the client happy too,” wrote one employee, “I believe this ability to create a good match between the employee and the client/job makes Hanson different from other consulting companies.”
Balance is the Key
They say balance is key to a good relationship, and employees at Hanson are given the flexibility they need to establish harmony amid their life and work.
“This flexibility is very important to me,” explained one employee, “I’m able to do a great job and have a fantastic career on my own terms, while maintaining balance with all the other things in life that are important to me. My success here is measured based on the success of my work contributions, not by how much time I spend in meetings or traditional ‘work hours’.”
Praise for the company’s flexible work schedule was plentiful and well-rated, and is likely a big factor in HCG’s high employee hiring and retention rate.
“The work/life balance here is excellent and inner-team trust is extremely high,” shared one employee.
Another wrote, “I love the ability to work from home,” while a coworker lauded “the ability to be independently creative when problem solving.”
“I appreciate the importance and flexibility of work/life balance–being able to complete tasks working at home is essential,” remarked another employee.
A Different Kind of Culture
Comments like “the company culture is fantastic,” and other similar forms of appreciation were abundant.
“Everyone works as a team and cares about each other,” shared one employee. Another remarked, “Personally, by being around and part of Team Hanson you want to try harder and do more than the requirements of your role. We have our own unique identity (geeks, nerds, geniuses & superheroes) which is both fun and celebrates our individuality–what we stand for and bring to the table as a team. I feel honored to be a part of Hanson!”
The company did well in the categories of communication and encouraging teamwork, providing their staff with an office in which their careers can flourish.
“Hanson has created an open and transparent team environment where everyone supports each other in a collaborative manner. Hanson genuinely cares about their employees and it shows in every aspect of the company,” explained one employee.
“This is the first contractor company I’ve ever worked for that has an annual Christmas party for all its employees,” added another. “I’ve worked for contractor companies where no one ever talked to its employees.”
Everyone involved with Hanson Consulting Group takes care of each other, from the woman at the top, to each consultant on the team. It’s the primary reason so many of its employees make comments like this: “I love my job and the people I work with. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else!”
