GSEC Winners Announced

The winners of the Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) were announced last Thursday at an awards banquet that featured Bill Gates Sr. as a keynote speaker. Nuru Light took home the grand prize with their rechargeable light designed to replace dangerous kerosene lamps in Rwanda. The light is recharged through the world’s first commercially available pedal generator. In addition to the grand prize, Nuru Light also won the People’s Choice Award and the Investor’s Choice Award. The Nuru Light was previously awarded the UNEP Sasakawa Priz, worth $200,000.
TouchB was awarded the Global Health Grand Prize for their prick-less anemia scanner, and the Judges Choice Prize went to Malo Traders, for their system to reduce post-harvest losses of rice. The Judge’s Choice Prize was created impromptu, and awarded $3,000 dollars contributed by the judges on the spot.
