Amazon is unveiling a new Amazon 4-star brick-and-mortar store in the South Lake Union neighborhood, which marks the e-commerce giant’s fourth 4-star outlet nationally.
The stores carry products that receive high Amazon.com customer ratings ― four stars and above ― and are top sellers or trending on Amazon’s e-commerce platform. The store’s products include consumer electronics, kitchen and home items, toys, books, games and more.
The new 4,000-square-foot South Lake Union store is located at 2101 Westlake Ave. ― at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Lenora Street ― a block east of the Amazon Spheres. A total of 20 employees are assigned to the store, according to Amazon spokesperson Jeanine Takala.
Takala declined to comment on how many more Amazon 4-star stores are slated to open, other than to say the e-commerce giant will be adding more locations in the future, including an outlet in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area before year’s end.
Amazon views the 4-star stores “as an extension of the Prime membership benefit,” Takala says, adding, however, that customers don’t have to purchase the $119 annual Prime membership to buy items at the store. Shoppers will have the option of signing up for a free 30-day trial Prime membership and instantly receiving the discounts available to Prime members.
“Digital price tags alongside every product show the Prime price and list price, as well as Prime member savings, average star rating, and the total number of reviews a product has received,” states an Amazon blog post announcing the launch of 4-star brand in September 2018. Products purchased through Amazon.com also can be returned at the 4-star store, with some common-sense restrictions ― i.e., no large, bulky items like mattresses.
Amazon’s other brick-and-mortar brands include Amazon Books, some 19 locations, including one each in Bellevue and Seattle; Amazon Go, a checkout-free grocery and ready-to-eat meal outlet, 15 locations with three more slated to open soon, including four existing outlets in Seattle; and Presented by Amazon, which are kiosks now located in four high-trafficked malls in California, Illinois and Nevada that feature top-brand items curated by Amazon. Earlier this year, Amazon closed its chain of 87 mini-stores, called pop-ups, many of which were based in malls and sold Amazon devices like Echos or Fire TV.
The Seattle Amazon 4-star store opens for business officially on Thursday, Aug. 15. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Amazon also operates 4-star outlets in Manhattan, Denver and Berkley, California.
