A total of 19 hospitals in Washington state ranked among the top 10% in the nation for quality of care in select specialties ranging from cardiac care to cranial neurosurgery, according to the 2020 analysis by Healthgrades, a leading online resource for physician and hospital information.

The Healthgrades study examined 4,500 hospitals nationally, including 45 in the Seattle metro area, across 16 specialty areas. A total of 11 hospitals in the Seattle area earned a Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Award, putting them in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide. A number of hospitals in the state earned the award across multiple specialties.

“Since we started reporting on hospital quality over 20 years ago, consumers have become increasingly savvy when it comes to researching their health and now expect greater transparency as it relates to hospital quality,” says Brad Bowman, M.D., chief medical officer of Healthgrades. “At Healthgrades, we’re committed to providing the most relevant data that focuses on clinical outcomes so that consumers can make the smartest decisions for their own care.”

For its hospital study, Healthgrades analyzed clinical outcomes as a measure of quality of care ― specifically mortality and complications ― using federal Medicare inpatient data for the years 2016-2018.
