Seattle Business magazine is looking for family businesses in Washington state that set the standard for excellence. Entries are selected by a panel of expert judges and will be honored at an awards banquet on December 7, 2016. Every finalist is asked to speak, and many families bring their entire families onto the stage. Some families use the occasion as an opportunity to recognize the work of their founders and to introduce the younger generations of the family to the best practices of our state's family businesses.
Family-owned businesses face unique challenges. To survive and grow, they must address complex issues involving often-difficult family dynamics in addition the business challenges every other business faces. We are looking for companies that have been in place for at least two generations, although businesses that have survived three generations or more are particularly favored by the judges. Equally important, judges are looking for the telling details that tells the story of how the business grew and survived and specifics about the kinds of processes the businesses follows on such issues of succession, to assure the business's success over the longterm.
Gold and Silver winners are awarded in three size categories. Companies are also honored in special categories such as Succession, Business Transformation, Generational Transition, Growth and Legacy.
